Heather McKay
PR and Content Executive
Heather trained as a journalist and began her career at BBC Magazines, where she commissioned and edited stories, developed website content, and grew social media channels. She moved into marketing in 2019, bringing her knack for impactful and engaging storytelling with her.
Prior to joining Distinctive, Heather was content manager for engineering and design consultancy Hydrock, now Stantec, where she sharpened her ability to communicate complex technical topics in a relatable way. From building safety to social value and community engagement, she wrote everything from news stories and social posts to newsletters – always focused on making ideas accessible and engaging.
At Distinctive, Heather helps clients find and tell the stories that matter, working across campaigns and communications plans that cut through the noise.
Where is your favourite place in the South West?
I live in Stroud with my young family and we love it – there’s a great community energy and loads of things to do in the area, and we’ve got beautiful countryside on the doorstep. We’ve been lucky enough to see to swifts, butterflies and slow worms in the garden, and even the occasional red kite hovering above the house.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
I’ve always been a bit of a DIY crafter! I used to make props and costumes for friends’ music videos and art projects. That naturally developed into my current hobby of creating detailed miniature scenes – especially ones based on recognisable scenes from books or films. For example, I made a book nook (a large, book-shaped box that lives on a bookshelf) based on the view into Narnia from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe!
What piece of work are you most proud of?
In 2023, I returned from maternity leave and immersed myself in the complex world of the Building Safety Act (BSA). It was new territory for everyone, but I was really proud of the work I put in to understanding it, talking to industry experts and turning that into content that was easier to understand. That campaign culminated in an industry conference focused solely on the BSA, a massive feat of organisation for a small team, that remains a career highlight.
